Exciting Development plans for Reading Hockey Club

Something to make a noise about...

Reading Hockey Club is planning bold changes for the future and we need your help to make it happen.

RHC has successfully transformed itself from a mid-sized London League club to one of the most respected and formidable hockey clubs in Europe.  It has done so through a combination of bold and well executed infrastructure developments and an unswerving focus on the quality of its hockey performance.  RHC is a club that knows where it is going and how to get there.

The club is about to undertake its biggest development project since moving from its original home in Church Road, Earley to our current site at Sonning Lane and we are keen the entire membership and supporters understand what we are doing, where we are going and how they can help us get there.

In reality we all know we have now outgrown our facilities and we urgently need more top class pitches and facilities at Sonning Lane to enable us to both remain successful as an elite club as well as ensuring the wider membership enjoys regular hockey on our own home pitches.

The RHC Development Team has obtained planning permission to build additional Astroturf pitches on the Sonning Lane site utilising area covered by both Reading and Berkshire County Sports (Sonning) clubs which gives us a big enough footprint to realise our vision of becoming a pre-eminent European hockey club:

  • Leading hockey centre in the UK
  • Top class facilities
  • Full time development & coaching
  • Used by whole hockey family – schools, clubs, county and the wider community

Sonning Lane Plans

We have also raised sufficient funds and financial commitments to enable us to begin building the first additional pitch and the appointed contractor has begun work already on a new pitch which will be positioned between the existing Berkshire County Sports Club pitch and the boundary with Reading Hockey Club.

The plans shown here give you an idea of the longer term footprint for the pitches we hope to build, which involves building a further two pitches on the current Reading Cricket Club ground immediately in front of the pavilion.  As part of its own development, the cricket club has been considering relocating to a new purpose built cricket pavilion on the second cricket square at Sonning Lane and using a second existing 3rd party pitch within walking distance of the club.   The cricketers are continuing to develop their plans and the construction of the two additional hockey pitches in the future is dependent on their decision to move forward.

Over time we also plan to upgrade the clubhouse, changing and parking facilities at the club to ensure we continue to witness and experience many years of successful, enjoyable and sociable hockey at Reading Hockey Club.

Hockey is a fast growing and very popular sport for men and women, young and old alike, and it attracts high quality individuals in the form of players, families and supporters.  Reading Hockey Club offers very attractive sponsorship opportunities to companies looking to capture the interest and engender the goodwill of this outstanding target audience with some extremely good value sponsorship packages when compared with many of the other marketing opportunities in the Thames Valley area.

To achieve these bold plans and deliver our vision we need the energy, passion and entrepreneurial skills of ALL our members and the active involvement and support of the wider Reading Community to help deliver this next big step in our development.

“And so my fellow hockey enthusiasts ask not what your club can do for you – ask what you can do for your club”, we welcome the active support of every single person in the club and the wider Reading community so please get in touch to offer your energy, passion and skills no matter where these may lie.

Your Club Needs You!
