Fantastic Season Finale
A fantastic and unexpected end to the season against our old friends from Spencer.
Unexpected because Alan and I set off from the Club with an expectation of a fairly relaxing afternoon, playing a half each as we had plenty of cover. Things changed on the pitch as we had ten players present and no sign of Yogan. Spencer kindly offered us Richard, one of their subs who was just returning from pneumonia and pleurisy and sporting a wide hooked hockey stick that I thought had been torched years ago.
The young professionals insisted that I skipper as the seasoned pro.
Honours were even for the first 15 minutes. Following an incisive attack the ball went free in the Spencer circle. The timing coincided with guest Richard's stumble and the ball ended up in the net: Reading 1 Spencer 0
Spencer responded quickly and soon equalised with a well worked short corner. Eric retained parity with a couple of excellent saves, one courtesy of his face guard. This inspired us to take control with midfield trio of Fitty, Hugh and Richard M taking advantage of space with some well worked moves, one of which resulted a skilfully taken goal by Richard M.
Reading started the second half in the same way that they finished the first and used this dominance to score two well taken goals through Mike Brown and Micky D. Spencer's attacks were being well managed by the Reading defence with Ian A as solid as ever and Alan W producing an inspired performance against a high quality winger. Robbo supported the attack as well as carrying out his defensive duties. Spencer pulled one back from a short corner but had no answer to our free flowing attacks which resulted in two further goals from Mike B in true Keith Hunt style and another from guest Richard. Final result Reading GM 6 Spencer 3.
Many thanks to Immy and Amrish for blowing and contributing to a great final game of the season. The match was followed by some excellent hospitality from our hosts which included an introduction to some fine Spencer HC Riocha (photos attached) - a fitting end to the season.
Summer well everybody
