Cup Success for Top Two Mens Sides

Reading’s top two men’s sides were both in action yesterday in the National KO and 2ndXI cups and both prgoressed in a day of cup success for the club.

The 1XI made it through to the semi-finals of the National KO Cup, just one game away from a Sonning Lane final, with a 2-0 victory at Hampstead and Westminster. The goals bookended the game with Andy Todd scoring after only 14 seconds to give the boys the best possible start and Richard Mantell closing the game with a penalty corner conversion in the 70th minute. Reading now await the draw for the semi finals. They could face their indoor conquerors East Grinstead as an Ashley Jackson hat-trick helped them to 4-2 defeat over the University of Birmingham. The other two Premier sides weren’t so fortunate feeling the loss of their international players as both crashed out to Division 1 sides. Cannock were denied their chance of a treble by a David Shingles golden goal in the 72nd minute to send Southgate through and after Guildford’s game with Beeston finished all square at 1-1 it was the Midland side who were comprehensive in the stroke competition, winning it 3-0.

The 2ndXI played their first game in the 2ndXI cup and sailed through to the quarter finals with a 6-1 defeat of Bath Buccanneers at Sonning Lane.
