L1A: Epsom 1 Reading 1

By Reading Hockey Club • Oct 18th, 2006 • Category: L1A, Match Reports

Reading Ladies 1a’s travelled to Epsom expecting a tough game and the match
lived up to their expectations.  Epsom started strongly and set the scene
for the match as they attacked from the start and caused pressure on the
Reading defence.  The back 4 for Reading held firm and were aided by goalie
Sarah Gowers who was on top form denying the Epsom forwards time after time.
Epsom forced numerous short corners in the first 30 mins but all were
defended well.  With half time approaching and Epsom still not able to find
a way through Reading went on the break and forced their 2nd short corner.
A tried and trusted routine saw Nicky West stop for Katharine Pike to fire
into the corner to give Reading an unlikely 1-0 lead.  Within 2 minutes
Epsom equalised from an identical short corner to go into half time all
square.  In the second half Epsom again pushed forward and Gowers was called
upon to make a number of good saves.  Reading defended well (and rode their
luck at times) to keep the scoreline level but were unable to set up any
sustained attacks to cause difficulties for the Epsom back line.  The game
finished 1-1 and Reading were fortunate to get away with a point.  Man of
the match voting was won by goalie Sarah Gowers.  This week is a break in
the league programme and Reading return to action on Sat 28 October at
Sonning lane at 12 noon when they entertain Oxford Hawks.
