Reading Ladies 5 Clifton 1

The ladies 1s, playing at home for the first time in three weeks, needed to keep the momentum going if they were to challenge for a top 4 spot. A pattern seems to be emerging with The Ding once again starting brightly, creating chance after chance.

It did however take until 15 minutes in for the deadlock to be broken. Daman, stepping up aggressively made a great tackle then released Gilbert down the right hand side who glided past the defenders like they weren’t there. Some quick interplay between Gilbert and Munt and a clever deflection by Potgeiter left the ball a yard out from goal for Halle to steam in from the half way line to make it 1-0.

Whilst keeping flow in the game and remaining in control the lead was doubled. Danson returned to the Lane to score in the 31st minute for some welcomed breathing space. Posting up on the left side of the D she unleashed her trademark backhand into the bottom right corner.

With the halftime score 2-0 the first goal after the break was going to be crucial and Reading started with a bang. 20 seconds in the score was 3-0 after some good work between Potgeiter and Richardson on the right. Brooker got in on the act and once again the ball ended up on the far post for Becky ‘poacher’ Halle to finish off nicely.

With the game looking like it was all but over Reading pressed on looking for a convincing win helped by the Blue Army, who were in good voice. Team goals were the order of the day the 4th on 48 minutes scored by Munt and the 5th finished by Potgeiter in the 54th minute put the game out of reach. Clifton didn’t give up though and continued to press and were rewarded for their efforts in the 57th minute when Leigh’s shot was deflected into the roof of the net leaving Gianfrancesco, making her debut in the Reading goal wrong footed with no chance of making the save.

The run continues but due to other results Reading’s league position remains 7th. All eyes and focus moves to Sutton Coldfield next week when another 3 points are needed. I’ve got a feeling I’ll be saying that every week!
