Reading Hockey’s U10 Girls, U10 Boys, U12 Girls and U12 Boys all won their respective Berkshire County Tournaments last Sunday, 17th March to take their places in the Regional stages – a huge congratulations and well done to our succesful next generation!
Reading’s U10 Girls won a closely fought tournament at Maidenhead against Maidenhead and Wokingham. They beat Maidenhead 2-0 and Wokingham 6-0 to make it to the final against Maidenhead. After a nail-biting first half when Reading went 1-0 down, they triumphed in the end despite the torrential rainfall to win 4-1.
The U10 Boys also had a great day, beating Maidenhead 4-0 and Slough 2-1 to get to their final. After a 1-1 score in the final, it went to penalty flicks, and they finally won with a 4-1 score. The excitement in the crowd during the penalty flicks was amazing, with so many supporters behind them.
The Boys U12 Berkshire tournament was held at Reading with five teams entered, aiming for the first two places in a round-robin format.
Reading fielded two teams and, despite persistent rain, played some good hockey throughout. The B team had two very close matches, losing 1-0 to the eventual runners up from Wokingham, and gaining a creditable 0-0 draw against local rivals Sonning.
The A team carried their good form into this event from last week’s fourth place in the John Wright tournament at Havant, winning all four games and scoring 19 goals with none conceded. Maidenhead were the unlucky team to just miss out on qualifying for the Regional round.
Both Reading teams were able to reproduce the fast, possession hockey that has been the core of this season’s coaching at Sonning Lane. The quality of play also reflected the strength of the U12 Boys squad this season.
