L1A: Reading 2 Chelmsford 0
By Reading Hockey Club • Oct 9th, 2007 • Category: L1A, Match Reports, NewsSunday’s game saw Reading 1a’s face Chelmsford in the first round of the cup. Aware that this was going to be a tough game and legs would be slightly tired from the day before, Reading went all out in their efforts to secure a win.
The first half, just like yesterday’s game, saw many chances from both teams to open the score board. Chelmsford had a number of short corners to take advantage of, but with solid closing down from the defence, and some key saves from Helen the keeper, they failed to take gain a goal from any of their opportunities.
At half time the score stood at 0-0 and we were keen to up our game even more in the second half. With consistent passing and great work rate by the team, we were finally rewarded by a goal, after Westie found the back of the net, after a great cross from Badger.
The second goal came after good pressure from Reading in the D, where Whitters had the chance to shoot, and although she didn’t make perfect contact with the ball, she did enough to get it to the goal, bobbling over everybody’s sticks! – And as they say every goal counts!
Again Chelmsford had opportunities through short corners, but the defence, consistent in breaking defensive shorts down, kept a clean sheet, and ensured that Chelmsford didn’t break through. Helen again made some very crucial saves throughout the second half of the game and everybody worked very hard up until the very last whistle.
We were disappointed not to have won any short corners through the game, but are happy that we got the gaols instead and they got the shorts! (Rather than the other way round!) The next round will see us face Exe away, which will be a trek, but we look forward to progressing further in the cup.
