Reading Ladies completed an historic double when they added the Investec Championship Title to their Maxifuels Supersixes Indoor crown by beating rivals Leicester in an exciting penalty shoot out at Sonning Lane. For Reading it was revenge for the loss suffered at the same stage last season after another close and highly competitive encounter. Reading’s final win came on the back of a 5-1 semi-final victory over Canterbury the day before.

In a typical close and cagey encounter Reading took the lead on 52 minutes when Sam Quek was fouled and Emma Thomas converted the resulting penalty stroke. With time running out Leicester threw everything at Reading and won a penalty corner as time ran out – converting it to take the game into extra time in dramatic fashion. Two periods of silver goal extra time still couldn’t separate the teams, so for the second year running the final went to penalty shuffles.

Sarah Ellis proved the hero of the hour, as she blocked 4 out of 4 of the Leicester attempts, leaving succesful coinversions from Alex Danson and Kate Walsh to secure the title.

Reading’s Kate Walsh was awarded the “player of the season” award, whilst Sam Quek picked up the “Woman of the Match” award for her final performance.

For Reading Hockey the win was the icing on the cake after 2 hugely successful weekends of hockey at Sonning Lane – a massive thankyou to all the teams and officials, supporters, our colleagues at England Hockey and most of all the volunteers who made the events happen and created a fantastic setting to showcase hockey at the top level – as with Sky Sports cameras there and highlights shown on TV it was a huge step for domestic club hockey in this country.

While most of us are winding down from another season, Reading Ladies now have their eyes set on completing a unique triple, as they prepare to compete in the Euro Hockey Trophy in Antwerp fro 17th to 20th May. More details of the competition can be found on the tournament website and the girls would welcome any travelling support!
