It was an action packed super Saturday at Sonning Lane this weekend with both Mens and Ladies 1XIs in EHL action. The men were up first against Loughborough Students and were rocked to find themselves behind after only 5 minutes thanks to a Richard Smith penalty corner. This wasn’t the most fluid blues performances, and some of the more flowing stuff in the first half game from the students, but Reading got back into it after 27 minutes with a Simon Lanyon drag flick at a penalty corner. Reading went behind once again in the 54th minute when Reading Old Boy finished for his new university side, but Austin Smith levelled once again for Reading only 3 minutes later from another penalty corner. There was a dramatic climax to this game when some good work from John Brown presented Andy Watts with an opportunity in the 68th minute, which he lashed in to give Reading hte lead for the first time in the game with only 2 minutes to go. This result leaves Reading 2 points ahead of Beeston who they take on tomorrow (14th October, 14:00 push back Sonning Lane) to complete their double header weekend.

There were goals aplenty for the ladies too, but their finished with their first defeat in nearly a year. Olympic medallist Jane Sixmith demonstrated she is still world class with a brace of goals for the visitors, who also featured former Reading player Anna McGlaughlin. Reading found themselves 4-1 down shortly after half time, but fought back to 4-3 with 20 minutes to go. The visitors held on however to take the points and drop Reading to 2nd in EHL Division 1. Match Report

It wasn’t a great day for the ladies section. In addition to this unfamiliar defat for the 1s there were also defeats for the 1As (2:3 to Harrow), 2s (1:4 to Amersham and Chalfont) and 3s (£:& to Abingdon Pilgrims). However the 2As managed a 1-1 draw against Oxford University 2s and the 3As (3:0 against Abingdon Ladies 2s) and 4s (4:1 against Wycombe Ladies 4s) provided the section with their only victories.

For the men the 2s (3:1 against Spencer) and Rustlers (4:0 against Spencer) recorded victories, the Mens 3s and Rejects both drew with Maidenhead, whilst the Rascals, Rovers, Refills and 2As all lost out, with the 4s suffering a particularly painful 0-10 defeat against Teddington 4s.
