Hot on the heels (well almost!) of their fantastic treble-winning performance at the Euro Hockey Trophy in Antwerp, here is Reading Ladies’ captain Emma Thomas’ final update – huge congratulations to the whole squad for bringing a fitting end to a wonderful season…

So as most of you will be aware (seeing as it’s taken me 5 days to write this – sorry!) last weekend was pretty special for Reading HC and particularly the Ladies 1s as we won our first ever European trophy!
Other results meant that in order to qualify for the final, we needed to draw or win in our last pool game against Russian side CSP Izmaylovo. On Saturday they drew 2-2 against Antwerp so we knew they would present us with stiff opposition. Although it wasn’t our most complete performance, we managed to grind out a 3-2 win; part of being successful at tournaments like this is being able to find a result even on the days when things aren’t going so well and the ability to do that is testament to the work ethic and belief in the squad.
Playing recently crowned Spanish champions Real Sociedad in the final on Monday presented us with a more familiar challenge; most of the squad have played a significant amount against Spanish sides so were used to their style of play and some sterling video work meant we had the opportinity to prepare really well. It was definitely the most competive game we played and with our penalty corner threats improving throughout the tournament, it was fitting that this proved the difference between the sides, with both Alex Danson and Kate Walsh finding the net from set pieces.
Huge thanks to the friends, parents and marvellous Blue Army who came out to support us, it was absolutely amazing to have so many smurf hats around and we are looking forward to next season where we will play in the Cup (the top division of female European hockey) and have the opportunity to compete against the best of Holland and Germany! Not to mention heading out to Lithuania for our first opportunity to play in Europe indoors!
For those enjoying Wiz and Becky’s efforts on the video blog, their final two entries can be found here…luckily they are better at hockey than impromptu news flashes!!

Finally, on behalf of the team I would just like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful management who work even harder than we do, and also to every single member of this incredible club - we couldn’t do what we do without you!
See you next season!
