Reading kicked off the new competitive season at Sonning Lane on Saturday with a double header against rivals Canterbury.
First up in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division, champions Reading took on last season’s 3rd placed Canterbury team. The first half saw several chances from both sides being narrowly missed and Reading’s Sarah Ellis making some crucial penalty corner saves.
It was early in the second half however when a counter attack from Canterbury led to Anna Baker scoring the opening goal. Nikki Kidd followed up with a skilfully placed penalty corner flick to take Canterbury’s lead to 2-0. Reading showed grit and determination to fight back later in the second half and some individual skill from Susie Townsend finished off by Ellie Cockburn made it 2-1 with 3 minutes remaining.
Continued pressure from the home side enabled Hayley Munt to force the equaliser only for it to be disallowed moments later. With only seconds left on the clock, Canterbury were able to maintain possession to come away with a 2-1 win.
A special mention must also be made to congratulate Kate Walsh and Helen Richardson on their wedding day!
Following on Reading Men took on their Canterbury rivals in a repeat of last season’s Now: Pensions Men’s Hockey League Premier Division 3rd/4th place playoff which Reading had won to secure their place in the Euro Hockey League.
Reading again finished on top, having dominated for long spells, with a goal from Andy Watts dividing the sides at the interval. Nick Catlin extended the lead just after half time, and despite Ben Allberry pulling one back for the visitors, a third Reading goal from Harry Slater saw them home for a comfortable 3-1 win.
