Ladies win again…By Reading Hockey Club • Oct 5th, 2013 • Category: Home Page, L1, Match Reports, News
After a resounding victory last time out over Olton, Reading were keen to continue their winning ways against newly promoted Beeston, a side sure to provide a stern test. The team welcomed back newly weds Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh, along with the Mediterranean sunshine that had appeared to have followed them home.
Reading started brightly and took advantage of excellent build up play down the right hand side from Alex Danson and Helen Richardson-Walsh, the latter ending the move by slotting the ball into the goal. Beeston dropped off to half court and produced some excellent counter attacks; however, good deep defence from Reading nullified these chances. Reading were able to capitalise on a period of good possession by winning a penalty corner. A powerful drag flick from Sam Quek forced a good save from the Beeston keeper, only for Susie Gilbert to fire in the rebound to make the score 2-0.
In the second half, Beeston defended extremely well and made it very difficult for Reading to create open play chances. Reading were patient in possession and won a series of corners, but were unable to capitalise on any of these chances. Beeston were still very dangerous on the counter and Reading had to ensure that they were diligent in defence and in retaining possession. With less than four minutes to go, Beeston went to a kicking back. However, Helen Richardson-Walsh ended a good move, adding another goal to her name to make the final score 3-0.
Overall, it was a good professional team performance that ensured the 3 points. We look forward to hosting the University of Birmingham at Sonning Lane next week.
