A frustrating day for Reading 1As, losing 3-2 to a physical Maidenhead side in a game that they dominated in large parts. For the first twenty minutes in particular Reading played with great tempo and deservedly went a goal up. Jane intercepted the ball just inside the Maidenhead half and spread the play wide to Keelie on the right wing, who crossed powerfully. Chloe made a well-timed run and shot first time into the net.
After 22 minutes a Maidenhead break brought about a good save from Grace. However Reading struggled to clear the resulting corner and Maidenhead scored a very scrappy goal against the run of play. 1-1 at halftime.
Maidenhead had their best period of the match at the start of the second half and 4 minutes in won the ball in midfield, broke quickly and scored to make it 2-1. Ten minutes later, Maidenhead scored again, another quick break forced a save from Grace, but Maidenhead were able to convert the rebound.
From this point on Maidenhead hardly got another touch of the ball as Reading regained their composure and launched wave after wave of attacks on the maidenhead goals.
After 25 minutes, a good shot by Fran from a short corner was blocked on the line by a Maidenhead defender and Reading were awarded a penalty stroke. Unfortunately Jess saw her flick saved.
Three minutes later Reading won another short corner. The injection was slightly behind striker Fran, but she improvised well, cut inside and dispatched a reverse shot low into the goal – 3 -2.
Almost immediately from the restart Charlotte was penalised for a stick tackle and given a yellow card, really highlighting the umpires inconsistent decision making as fouls of this nature had been made by Maidenhead throughout the match.
However, despite being a man down, Reading were in total control and looked the only team likely to score, with Chloe coming closest.
This disappointing result shouldn’t take away from the quality of Reading’s play – we woz robbed!
