Reading 1As first fixture of the season was at Sonning Lane against Woking and everyone was very excited to get the campaign underway. It seemed like the team had attracted a sizeable crowd, but could just have been the volume added by having Chloe cheering from the sidelines while recuperating from her ankle injury.
In the initial phases, Reading struggled to cope with Woking’s odd set up – with two centre halves and needed Goalkeeper Roxy to make a couple of sharp saves.
Eventually the team got organised and Reading started to impose their style on the game, but lacked the ruthlessness in front of goal that Coach Jon had demanded. However after 30 minutes Brodie won a short corner. The midweek practice paid dividends as the team executed well and Fran shot low into the far corner – 1-0 to Reading.
Two minutes later Reading doubled their lead. A fast break featuring Immie and Liana created an opening for Keelie. Her shot was good, but well saved. However Liana was on hand to tuck home the rebound.
Halftime happiness, apart from a pretty serious calf injury for Maz.
The second half started with a period of sustained Reading dominance. The best chance fell to Liana after a great through ball from Poppy and a good cross from Keelie. However the Woking Goalkeeper made a good save and the score stayed at 2-0.
Woking seemed to be running out of ideas, but got lucky when their press won the ball deep in the Reading half and they converted the chance created. This lead to a frenzied final five minutes, during which Reading survived two short corners. However the team defended well together and showed some good composure to see the game through.
RUTHLESS and RELENTLESS!
