Reading Ladies 2As 2 Wallingford 2By Reading Hockey Club • Oct 28th, 2013 • Category: L2A, Match Reports
Saturday Oct 26th
Well the day started with Jess Biggs arriving at 9.25(!) thinking we had to meet at 10am – although this was the time we were due to play! Strong contender for DOD and we hadn’t even left the changing rooms! Meanwhile Little Pete bravely stepped in this week for Laura as coach.
Reading had a very slow start and conceded two goals in the first ten minutes. The Wallingford forwards played very high keeping Beverley and Anna busy, including a couple of 1 on 1′s at the top of the D… However, Reading were not disheartened and we started to play better as a team, passing well down the wings and making better posts towards the ball, especially from the forwards including Frankie, Eliza, Becci, Fen, Phil, Hannah and Abi. There was also good pivot play from Gabi and Kymran. The small crowd on the sideline including Blanche were starting to make their presence felt too (well that is until it rained!)
One memorable moment of the first half was when Gabi reverse hit a ball out of the 25 only to lift it, hitting the top of the railing and bouncing over the fence onto Sonning’s pitch who were unfortunately playing in that very area of the pitch. Fortunately no one was hit and but the looks of confusion were amusing. Reading finished the half much in the ascendency.
Anna gave a very encouraging team talk and then Pete took up the mantle, in Pete’s own words his talk “was like Braveheart!” Laura Craston you have a lot to live up to next week!
Reading started the second half much as they finished the first half with plenty of attacking play and lots of effort up front, Becci was making some great runs and passes in the D. Our structure was greatly improved with Bev acting as sweeper, meaning we could get ahead of the ball and attack up the pitch. There was lots of great play down the right wing from Gabi and from Frankie up front in the middle. Anna, fed up of having her shin pads tackled shouted at the umpire and soon after ex-Reading player Marie Burden was shown a yellow card, a little harshly for a bit of a wood chopping tackle on Abi. After explaining a yellow card met Marie had to leave the pitch, Reading took advantage of the extra woman. Soon Reading had a fantastic goal from Hannah which quickly boosted Reading’s confidence.
Reading started to play more aggressively and we won a number of short corners, a straight strike from Kymran levelled the scores at 2-2 all whilst Wallingford were reduced to 10 players.
At some point during the second half it seemed someone had pulled the plug as the rain poured down to the point we almost couldn’t see, leaving only the most ardent supporters on the sidelines.
In the last 10 the intensity stepped up a level as both sides battled in end to end action, Reading conceded their first short corners but managed to keep Wallingford out with some great work from the defenders including Bev, Alice L and Jen as well as some good saves from Jess.
A couple more minutes no doubt Reading would have scored another but they were relieved at the final whilst to take the point.
DOD: Phil (although this was awarded possibly incorrectly, someone spilled the beans that Phil hit herself with her own stick, but Phil advised actually a tackle was made and the ball came up and hit her).
