Reading 4′s 0-7 Buckingham Ladies 3′sBy Reading Hockey Club • Feb 9th, 2014 • Category: L4, Match Reports
Saturday 8th February
Buckingham came, Buckingham won, Buckingham left.
Meanwhile back on the pitch we had an audience – nice to see you Nett and Rachel and hope you will both be back playing again soon. Competition for Reading 4′s very own SPLASH is hotting up. Entries this week came from joint men of the match Shakila and Ann-Marie, though whether Ann-Marie sitting on Tammy’s head in the goal mouth counts as a dive is yet to be seen. It was certainly entertaining.
Buckingham are a young, fit and well organised side and I don’t think the scoreline reflects the game. Understanding of our new formation is growing, and with it confidence to push up the pitch. We spent much time in our attacking D, won many short corners but still we couldn’t score. The last 15 minutes of the match were played in appalling conditions with a dramatic and somewhat painful hail storm stopping play for 3-4 minutes. Buckingham were determined to play out the remaining 8 minutes on a white, hail covered pitch as they sought to extend their goal difference at the top of the table even further. I had a sense of humour failure (for which I apologise) but we took to the pitch determined to prevent them from scoring any more goals. This we achieved and indeed, with the hail covered pitch working to our advantage by slowing the ball down, the contest was much more even and we came very close to scoring on a couple of occasions. Sandra came closest with a cracking shot that went inches wide of the post.
We quickly retreated to the clubhouse for sausages and chips to serenade Heidi with a pretty tuneless rendition of Happy Birthday (40 last Sunday in case you are wondering!).
