MEN'S AWARDS

Performance Player of the Season: Julius Breucker. Julius “Boom Bom” Breucker has been an integral part of the 1st Team squad since joining Reading HC two years ago. In this time Julius has grown from boy to man, from fringe player to a key man in the squad. This season has seen Julius grow from strength to strength and we are very sad that this season will be his last for the foreseeable future, as he returns to complete his studies in Germany. We hope he will return to us in the future, and we wish him all the best.

Player of the Season: Huw Kimber Huw returned to us this season having completed his studies at ‘Lufbra’ and has been a stalwart for the 2s and 2As. His lung busting runs up the right hand side and his tendency to cut into the ‘D’ to hit a reverse-stick strike have become legendary!

Young Player of the Season:
Olie Brown This season has seen immeasurable improvement on the pitch from Olie, as he has matured into a rock in the heart of the 3rd XI defence. A mature head on young shoulders and the kind of guy that every team and club needs! In addition to his fantastic performances on the pitch, Olie has run the Young Leaders programme with great enthusiasm and is ever-present at all things Reading.

Veterans Player of the Season:
Simon Briscoe Another fantastic season for the ever-youthful Rustlers side made it difficult to pick out one name, however, it became clear that Simon Briscoe is the beating-heart of the side and takes the great honour of being the Vets Player of the Season.

Most Improved Player of the Season: Matthew Kemp This season has seen Matthew leap from the Retros side, through the Rovers and the 3s and into the Refills squad by the end. His work rate, enthusiasm and desire to improve are worth special mention, and we look forward to further improvement over the coming seasons.

Club Member of the Season:
Chris Withers It wasn’t until we had a Withers did we realise what we were missing! The Umpire’s Manager role has oft been viewed as a poisoned chalice, but Chris performs the task with great aplomb and skill and has managed to persuade many unwilling victims to perform the most vital role on the pitch this season. He himself has umpired so many games that it became almost impossible to count! We are very grateful for his efforts, and long may they continue.

Team of the Season: 2As. One of the most hotly contested awards every season, and this year a controversial choice. With the Rustlers winning their league having lost only one game and a positive goal difference in excess of 100, plus the league cup too, surely they were the natural choice? No!! This year a new name must go on the Team of the Season shield, and it was the 2As, who valiantly fought their way to promotion and a London League Cup Final. Perhaps not scaling the great heights of the Rustlers XI, but still a fabulous season despite losing a huge number of players at Christmas. The 2As team looked very different before and after the recess as they lost some 8 players to local-school hockey, and it is of great credit that the post-Christmas side went on a 10-game winning streak, which included a goal from captain Jon Bishop while masquerading up front.
