Youth Hockey

The Next Generation

Welcome to Season 2010/11.

We fondly refer to our youth hockey section as ‘The Next Generation’ and we provide a safe and enjoyable environment where young players from the age of 4 to 18 can learn and enjoy hockey. We are very proud of our growing youth section and we are always delighted to have new young people join us.

Reading provides a create a safe, fun and professional hockey environment for children for both sexes aged 4 to 18. Sessions for most ages run throughout the season on a Sunday morning.

At all ages we provide a balance of training and hockey game/match play suitable to the age of the child which allows them to continually develop their skills and understanding of the game whilst enjoying themselves and taking exercise.

Join in!

We welcome girls and boys from age 4 to 18. No-one needs to have played hockey before as our sessions cater for all abilities. All that is required is the enthusiasm to want to get active and find out about hockey.  Anyone can come along and join in some sessions before deciding whether hockey and Reading is right for them and we can often provide hockey sticks for trial sessions.

We are running some specific Taster Sessions for colts Under 6 to Under 12 that have never played hockey before but would like to give it a go.  These will be on Sunday 19th September, Sunday 26th  September and Sunday 3rd October at 10.30am – 11.30am.

Any child who may be interested in trying hockey is welcome to come and attend these sessions for free!

Before starting the first session (even if it is a trial session) you will need to complete a Membership form for your child and hand it to an administrator for your childs age group. This is essential for ensuring that we can run the sessions safely for everyone involved.

Registration

Again, to ensure your childs safety, all players must be registered with one of our team of administrators upstairs in the Club House before the start of each session. Coaches cannot allow unregistered players to train.

Club Kit

Our youth playing kit, along with sticks and other hockey accessories, is available from Clubgear, the Reading club shop inside the club house, which is usually open on Saturdays 10am – 4pm and on Sunday morning 9.30am – 12.00pm.

It is not essential to have club kit for training, but we expect our colts to play any matches they play in club kit.

For coaching sessions just need sports clothes suitable to the weather, shin pads and footwear for Astroturf. A properly fitting gum shield is ESSENTIAL.

Child Safety

The safety of your child is of paramount importance to us. Reading Hockey Club has recently been awarded Clubs First status and  is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable playing and social environment for all.

U16 Girls are Home Counties League Champions

By Reading Hockey Club • Jun 21st, 2010 • Category: Match Reports, U16 Girls

Reading Hockey Club played in the Girls Under 16 Home Counties League play offs today (Sunday) at Woking HC, semi finals followed by finals.

First we played Purley Walcountians in an even encounter and after a 1-1 draw in the game we were into golden goal extra time.  This resulted in no score which then lead on to penalty flicks.   Purley were  up by 2 after some good saves by their keeper but we came back to leave the score after each team had done 5 penalty flicks at 3-3.  After this we went onto sudden death flicks-after 3 each it was 3-3 and our goalie, Ellie Smith, saved their 4th.   Lucy Richmond managed to put away our 4th putting us through to the finals.

We played Surbiton in the finals who had beaten Bromley and Beckenham HC.   We got off to an early lead as within 5 minutes Lauren Minshull-Beech had struck a strong strike into the bottom corner.   Reading dominated the game but tired in teh second half and Surbiton scored in the last 5 minutes so we were then into extra time again.    Fortunately within the first 5 minutes we got a short corner and a very clam Lucy Richmond scored a hard strike into the corner to finish the match and we were crowned champions.    This means that we came 1st out of 32 teams in all the Home Counties Leagues.   This win can’t go without the help and support of our coaches Rachel Mann and Gem Notman.
