Reading Mens 3s Vs Ashford 1s
By Huw Kimber
Pre Hocktoberfest WIN!
The latest match for the 3's got off to a rocky start. More cards came out for both teams and you could tell from the, for want of a better word, passion being shown by the coach Liam Sanford that Reading were very frustrated with their performance. Sanford was eventually told to simmer down by the umpire which both benches found highly amusing, three guesses on what Sanford was shouting about. Unfortunately a scrappy goal from a short corner led to Reading going into the break 1-0 down.
A number of different tactics were discussed during the break which quickly started to make a difference as Reading started to make inroads into the Ashford half. Several short corners were won but Reading were unable to convert, down the other end in goal Jack Hitchins made a spectacular save with his stick in his top right corner to deny Ashford a greater lead.
The breakthrough for Reading came when Julius Manton-Jones received a pass at the top of the D from Toby Pratt who put in a great tackle on the advancing Ashford left back. Taking it onto the reverse Julius fired home from the shoulder of the D on his patented JMJ reverse to draw Reading level. This goal really changed the game and Reading started to create more and more chances. Reading finally took the lead from a well worked short corner seeing Dan Hulbert passing back to Huw Kimber from a 1-2 move to see the ball go under the keeper and in the goal.
A third goal quickly followed as the Ashford centre back gave a poor pass to the wing which was picked off by Kimber. A short passing play led to the ball dropping to Kimber again who slotted home an easy tap in on the reverse. Reading ended the game with a 3-1 win and a confidence boost going into the game the following weekend against local club Sonning.
Dan Hulbert remains goalless.
