Super Vets Dominate at Southgate
By Tim Armitage
Reading Relics travelled to Southgate for a sunny Ryder Cup fuelled match and came away as very impressive 7-0 winners (a great follow-up to the season opening 7-0 win against Hampstead) and they go top of the league with a +14 goal difference after two games.
The whole team played excellent Vets hockey with the ball moving early and fast to ensure Southgate were always chasing the game. First half goals from Hoops (celebrating his 50th birthday) and a sublime solo goal from Brad -running into the circle and lobbing the keeper perfectly - saw the Relics take charge of the game.
In a dominant second half performance five more goals were much more Relic in style i.e. good finishes from quality build up play and were scored, in chronological order, by: Micky, Dom Camilleri (our new Maltese / Italian stallion RHC Vets recruit) Peter, Laurie & Graham. With so many scorers we nearly made those who did not score take their own selfie but good sense prevailed and we took the attached rather stylish total squad photo on the outside staircase - it looks like a photo used for a new start-up advertising agency in the 1980s!
The only downside was that the Doom Bar barrel was off but the lack of good beer did not dampen the team celebrations and enjoyment of a thoroughly enjoyable match and a very satisfactory European Ryder Cup day. To make up for the poor Southgate beer the Henley car stopped at the Rebellion brewery for a couple of top-up pints so a second team selfie is attached from the Marlow brewery!
Big respect to Robbo for umpiring so well, driving and facing up to his second consecutive December hip-replacement with such positivity.
Next week the Grand Masters A team return to Southgate for another away game in North London – Bartie and Bob will select the team so wait for the email!
Well done all – game on .
