RHC 1As vs Barnes (H)

22nd November 2014

Having missed out on last week’s game, R Reporter is glad to report that Reading 1As returned to winning ways with a superb team performance against top of the table Barnes (well they were when we started anyway).
Barnes started with an aggressive press and Reading were struggling to clear their lines, but gradually imposed themselves on the game.
The Reading front line were working hard, with Susie and Chloe particularly putting in the effort to get goal side. When Barnes did break through, they found Grace in formidable form. To be honest, nothing looked like getting past her today.
Barnes were packing the middle of the pitch and Kat, Shannon and Holly were taking full advantage of the space out wide. One foray from Shannon resulted in a penalty corner as Barnes committed a very poor foul (from their point of view) to stop her.
Alys injected, Jane stopped and Sophie’s drag flicked looked destined for the goal as it sped past the keeper, only for Barnes defender to kick it off the line. Alys clinically despatched the resulting penalty flick, low into the right hand corner of the goal. Reading comfortably saw out the rest of the half and went into the break 1-0 up.
The second half was even more competitive. Fran took one Barnes attacker for a little spin round her stick before throwing her over her shoulder and in another sign off affection gave another forward a brief cuddle (or was it a headlock?).
Rach, despite her ‘butter wouldn’t melt’ persona got another card and looks set to beat Chloe’s record from last season.
As well as getting ratty with the umpires and each other, Barnes pushed another forward through in search of the equaliser. However this created more space for Reading and they fashioned some good chances, incuding Sophie Shakes getting clean through on the goalie, only to see her effort well saved.
It was great to see Chloe Nelson on the side lines today. Here’s hoping she’s soon back playing for the mighty 1As.
Reading can take enormous pride in their performance today. They worked hard, the teamwork was tremendous and spirit excellent. A win is what they deserved.
