A game of two halves
But this time we were awake at the start!
On a bitterly cold day, we arrived in good time at Southgate, only to discover the start time was delayed by 20 minutes due the late running of the last game. Still, it is a great clubhouse to hang around in!!
Team talk was short and sweet, with even a few 'Cinderella jokes thrown in: "Why was Cinderella bad at hockey? She ran away from the ball". After that things could only get better!
After a brief warm up we were off. Astonishingly the team were 'on the ball' from the start, great passing, good connections, fast on the break. The best we have played all season! The only hiccup being a ball up into the face for one of our players - blood spurting all over the place - but at least it was when subbing was due to happen! A great performance and by half time we were 2-0 up.
Half time talk: keep up the good work, continue to play like that, and we were ready for the second half.
Clearly their coach had given them the Alex Ferguson 'hairdryer treatment' as they were off at a cracking pace. Suddenly roles were reversed, we were on the defensive, not quite getting the passes away as the pressure mounted. Then Southgate got one back and it became very tense. Cards given to both sides. We found ourselves retreating further and further, and just couldn't hold the lead as they piled on the pressure. Sadly they scored again a few minutes from time, and we were left to reflect on what could have been.
BUT a great first half to remember and to take into the next game!
