Hugely enjoyable season

This was the latest and closest end to a hockey league in many, many years. Reading Relics and Hampstead went into the final Saturday level on points at the top of the London Supervets league but our clear goal difference advantage meant a win against Bromley & Beckenham would secure the title.

Respect to Bromley & Beckenham for travelling so far to honour such a late fixture but an impressive first half ensured we sealed the win and title – playing good flowing vets hockey we dominated possession and early goals from Tim Armitage and Micky settled the nerves and the Relics went on to play some excellent hockey. Augmented by Paxo, Brad, Hoops and Tim Armitage the team settled into great shape, we showed unconditional support for each other across the pitch and scored some excellent team goals to go into the break 4-0 up.

The second half was less fluid as Bartie rang the changes to ensure everyone got fair pitch time and Bromley deserved to score as they never gave up chasing the game. Our five goals came from: Tim A x2, Charlie Lowe – a sweet short corner strike, Peter W who ensured Brad’s goal bound shot went in off his stick (and took his tally to double figures) and Micky

Big thanks to John Miller and Richard Dodds for their touchline support (next season Doddsy?) and to Mike Gray for once again showing a touch of class on the whistle.

Bartie’s judicious selection has helped ensure the Relics were always able to field a strong side and I know I speak for all Vets in saying a “huge thank you to Nick for the many, many hours you put in each week to ensure the vets section is flourishing to the benefit of the whole club”. The fact that the Rustlers, Redsox and Relics all won Vets Hockey silverware and that we are in the final of the O50s England Hockey Cup is testament to his hard work.

It has been a hugely enjoyable season for all of the squad and a pleasure to skipper such an excellent squad of gracefully aging Relics; thank you to each and every one of you for making this another immensely satisfying year.

Congratulations Mark Boothroyd on being the Relics player of the season and your promotion in goal from the “sieve” to the “wok”; you have inspired us all both on and off the field. Congratulations to Mike Pell and Brad for sharing the ringer of the year award and finally congratulations to Jerry Cooke on the most improved player of the season award, 13 goals is something to brag about but sadly not quite enough to earn you the top gun slot!

If anyone is in London next Tuesday 30th April please try to join Hugh at the London League Awards evening from 6.15pm Old Doctor Butler’s Head, 2 Masons Ave, Moorgate
London, EC2V 5BT and help him lug home the silverware

Finally please let Bartie know your availability for Summer Hockey league as this helps raise a lot of money for the club and we need to fill two sides each week and help run the catering.

Well done Relics – CHAMPIONS!!

(Late news – Hampstead lost today so we win by three clear points!!)
