Volunteering

Become a volunteer!

The hockey club relies on the efforts of our many amazing volunteers, without whom the club would not function. And so, we encourage every one of our members to get involved.

As well as the hockey related jobs that include:

  • arranging fixtures,
  • booking pitches,
  • organising umpires,
  • team captains - managing and running teams, and
  • league contacts,

there are many ‘back office’ jobs in

  • finance,
  • communications,
  • membership,
  • facilities & grounds management,
  • fundraising & sponsorship,
  • welfare officers,
  • organising socials, and
  • special projects and events

The volunteer opportunities include jobs with a regular weekly requirement and other short term more project-based activities through to helping out at events.
You don’t need to be a member of the hockey club to help out. We welcome your mums, dads, aunts, uncles, friends or any other willing people you may know!

Current Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteer Coordinator – we are looking for someone to help organise our volunteers, spot opportunities, fill the gaps and create a rewarding network of volunteers who are doing the right volunteering to suit their time commitments and skill set.

Umpiring Coordinator – a game of hockey would not happen without the umpires. We are looking for someone to enable hockey to happen. Filling the spots to ensure every home game has an umpire. This includes working with the Umpiring Development Programme and liaising with appointed umpires. This requires a weekly commitment through the season. Could be a job share, expect this to take a couple of hours a week.

Sponsorship – Reading Hockey Club is always looking for sources of additional income; we are looking for someone to manage our relationships with existing sponsors whilst pursuing new prospects for the Club.

HR – We need someone to help manage our coaches and look after all the other human resources related tasks, much like you would find in any small business.

Club Mark Project – Club Mark is a Sport England and England Hockey badge of honour, to have the Club Mark accreditation means that we can call ourselves ‘A Great Club.’ We’re looking for someone to run this project and obtain the accreditation. (more info on Club Mark)

Grants – A hugely important role. We’re looking for someone to keep their ear to the ground and identify new grant/funding opportunities from government and charitable organisations and then to manage the application process.

Central Calendar / Booking System Project – help us reduce the admin by creating a central calendar and booking system for our AstroTurf pitches and Clubhouse.

Bar & Catering – every hockey club is measured on the success of its bar. We’re looking for someone to work with the existing Bar & Catering team, representing the hockey club section in order to achieve a fantastic experience for our members.

Events – we are always looking for ideas for social and fundraising events, and for people to help run and organise these events. This also includes EH competitions and other external events. We are looking for someone to run the Events team and people to be part of the team.

Communications – the comms team are always looking for more help, this could be taking on one of the weekly announcements or working in a more project-based style to help advertise events and socials. If you have the artistic touch, we have opportunities for graphic creation. Great with words? Could you be our copywriter or proofreader? Like talking to people? Could you be one of our ‘influencers’, making sure the comms’ messages are getting through?

There are so many more areas that you could help with, we can’t list them all here.

If you have a skill set that the club would find invaluable or have some time to give but don’t know how to help please get in touch. We will find a use for you!

Have a think about what you can do to help, be one of our amazing volunteers!
