V late Rustlers write up: an evenly matched contest with the Rustlers 11 facing a relatively young and very numerous Spencer squad.
Honours were broadly even in the first half, with just one goal separating the teams – Tim Armitage putting away a ball that was knocked chest high in the D by Spencer – many complaints from them that Tim had chested it down (which would have been a corner)– he confirmed it was his stick and that’s good enough for me.
We tired a little in the second half and conceded a couple of goals in relatively quick order – Spencer moving the ball swiftly through midfield and attacking at speed.
We dug deep and kept working, and got a little fortunate when a crashed ball into the D was deflected high by Spencer and Steve Brady popped up to get a deflection high into the net. We were perhaps even more fortunate when Spencer had a justifiable shout for a penalty stroke (a penalty corner given instead by one of their umpires). Justifiably upset they lost a little focus, failed to stop the injection and a swift clearance up the pitch found Brady wide in the D and he crashed it home from an implausibly wide angle. 3-2 with a few mins to go, and we held on to the ball well to take the three points.
There were relatively few chances for either team and we failed to win a corner in the game – the difference between us was that we took the few chances we had and they fluffed theirs.
Another great team performance from a bare 11 to keep the Rustlers’ winning streak intact. Well done all!
