Even our three Steve Redsox midfield is not enough to hold back a young Spencer squad

Spencer earned their 3-1 win in Battersea Park, their younger legs and bigger squad allowed them to stretch a hard working Redsox and score the vital goals.
With a bare eleven players, we knew we would find the going tough against a young home Spencer team especially when we saw they had three substitutes on their bench.
We allowed Spencer to score an easy early goal before we found our stride and fought back well in the second part of the first half, we scored a deserved equaliser as Tim Armitage neatly deflected home an excellent cross from Laurie to take us into half time 1-1.
In the second half, everyone worked their Redsox off, inspired by our unique three Steve midfield (English, Scottish and South African), hard running from our forwards and a stalwart defence led by Mark B in goal we held out for most of the second half despite Spencer having the majority of possession. Playing sweeper Charlie Lowe’s Fitbit recorded 15,000 steps which was indicative of the effort he and the whole squad put in.
Eventually sublime lob from the Spencer left wing over Mark from the far-left corner of the circle breached our defence ten minutes from time, this was shortly followed well worked Spencer shot corner to seal their win. Despite the loss, we are still within a few points of Epsom and Southgate (although strangely FixturesLive has not recorded any of yesterday’s Div 2 league results).
Our thanks to Mike Gray for umpiring well (and to our Swindon road warriors for picking him up en route)
It was good to see a core group of Redsox return to RHC in time to share a few beers with the Rustlers and the Eastcote teams, although having come back directly from the game I must admit that stiff legs made getting up the RHC stairs harder work than normal.
Good luck to the O60s today and well done to the Rustlers, with East Grinstead failing to pull away at the top of League One it looks to be a very open title race.
Next week the Redsox have a week off but Bartie will try to get some of us games with Super Vets and Rustlers. We have a Redsox table of 12 at next Friday’s Burns Night so I look forward to seeing some of you there.
