Campaign starts next week

The Relics won their final warm up friendly 4-1 against a Spencer side which included Amrish and Immy. We played four quarters to allow us to rotate umpires and players and for many this was their first game of the new season.

As this was the final selection match before we play Hampstead in the opening league game next week the team went in keen to prove their Relic credentials. We had some good spells of hockey but did not create as many clear chances as we should have given our possession advantage, all of us were guilty of not playing the easy early ball or making poor quality passes when we did.

That said we did well to outplay Spencer and when we moved the ball on early we looked a threatening side; it was good to see Roger moving freely in his first game back since being smashed in the ankle by a Holden shot in April and David Hudson did well to score twice to underline his Relic capabilities.

Thanks to Mike S, Hugh, Hoops and Laurie for sharing the umpiring duties although Immy was not best pleased when he got a yellow card five minutes from the end for being overly aggressive to both Graham, whom he felt challenged him unfairly from the wrong side, and to umpire Laurie, who cautioned him with a yellow after his overly vehement verbal reaction. A few beers and red wine helped reassure Immy that we love him really and we hope to see him playing for the Reading Vets on a regular basis this season.

Next week Bob will captain the Relics and the team will be selected after extensive analysis of recent performances, fitness levels and bribes given to-date. Good luck Bob and team.
