Onwards and upwards

A beautiful Autumn day and a beautiful result. The Ladies 3s won their first match of the season today.

It has been a frustrating start to the season for the 3s, who before today had recorded one draw and three losses. However, the last two weeks have seen a big improvement in play and the team falling victim to some ‘interesting’ umpiring decisions.

This game started brightly, with the Reading players defending well, moving the ball swiftly upfield and putting good pressure on the Oxford Uni side, pushing high into the attacking 25. Everyone was working hard, although neither goalkeeper was put under too much pressure. At half time the match was goalless, but Reading was feeling positive about a good outcome.

Ten minutes into the second half, Harriet made an excellent run into the left corner, taking her defender with her, she laid the ball off to Gracie who played a well-timed pass across the face of the goal for a nifty slap in at the far post for Molly. Textbook stuff – and just what we had practised at training!

There were a few sweaty moments inside our D but the defence outfit, well directed by Lizzie in goal, kept their heads and cleared sensibly each time, including riding the storm of a few defensive short corners. Oxford was gaining in confidence and beginning to open up Reading with their pacey forwards, but credit must be given to the hard work in midfield of Sarah, Gracie, Flo and the terrier Nooshi who thwarted them time and again and moved the ball on convincingly.

From an Oxford attack into the Reading 25 there was a great turnover and the ball was moved up to the attacking D swiftly. Gracie received the ball just outside the D, but made a beautiful pass to Sue who dummied the defender and found a big space inside the D to slam home a well-deserved second goal.

And 2-0 it finished. It was certainly a great feeling to be winning, and hugely encouraging to see the team work so hard and play well together. Onwards and upwards girls – perhaps we can work on winning some short corners next week? Special mention to the full of energy newcomer Charlotte, you are a very welcome addition to the madness!
