Missing 4 of our core players, and with others playing our second match in 3 days,

our final fixture of the season was always going to be different. And different it was. For a start, we lost (2-5, goals from Tia and Liz). Whilst we had patches of attractive, flowing hockey (with Liv and Janice being voted joint MOM) the reality was that we were simply outplayed by a well organised and experienced team. The nervous tension of the final weeks of the season had caught up with us, and whilst the game was played with a spirit of friendliness, there was nothing we could do to prevent the loss.
But success cannot always be measured by wins. We were, of course, absolutely delighted to be crowned undefeated (in the league) champions, but I am equally delighted to record some other notable successes which I share with you now.
1. No ambulances required pitch side all season
2. Supply of ice packs not exhausted
3. A mere 36 players represented the 4's over the season
4. We had the same starting line up on 3 occasions
5. No one 'relieved' themselves on the pitch - bizarrely the Wychwood umpire warned us that this would warrant a yellow card!
6. Tracy H retained her crown as top goal scorer - phew!
7. We welcomed new players to the fold, and delighted in the experience and encouragement they gave to new and returning players. Liv slotted into the team seamlessly (though may be regretting sharing quite so much with us!), and Henna ended her first season of ladies hockey as our most improved player
8. Kelly got married. Zoe changed jobs to ensure she could play more often (but then went on a months delayed honeymoon during the season - what kind of planning do you call that?!). Tammy refused to let health issues interfere with her love of hockey and life. Tracy M went without sleep before shifts to add pace to the team. Janice, aka Wally, played in any position required. Amanda was our unsung hero, quietly going about her business on the pitch and managing our money. Heidi was our calming influence. Audrey and Mary made themselves available whenever asked. Fran was happy to keep, play on the pitch or umpire as requested. Ant ran herself ragged for our cause, successfully marshalling our press all season. Karen was a very supportive vice captain, happy to share her astute reading of the game with anyone - and she scored a fabulous reverse stick goal. Liz brought an infectious enthusiasm to the team. And last, but by no means least, the umpires survived to blow another season despite the often 'helpful suggestions' of our Player of the Season Sandy.

Congratulations and thank you to all our players, team manager Dipesh, umpires and opposition. Roll on September.
