First game of the season and the sun was shining, result!
Sticks were dusted and cobwebs removed and the game started well. Great defensive work by Sue Newman and Lauren and some fantastic flying reaction saves from Fran kept Reading in the game in the first 10 minutes. Good balls out of defence were taken at speed by the midfield, and on to the forwards who really tested the Maidenhead defence. The hard work paid off and a good ball across by Amy found Maddy who slotted it home to put Reading 1-0 up.
End to end hockey and a short corner to Maidenhead, an amazing short-splitting save, mistaken for a fart, was picked up again by Maidenhead and put in the goal. We went in to half time 1-1.
Second half started with a determination and grit from the Reading defence and tactical strategic play from the Reading forwards. Our legends Sue, Blanche and Rachel encouraging the youngsters and making experienced decisions, key tackles and control, Reading got moving. Harriet made a great transition from moving from defence to wing!
A flash shot outside the top of the D by Blanche sadly hit the back board without a touch in the D. Some great tackles by Hannah (aka Toby Carvery) and passing to Lauren and Flo helped the forward line attack the Maidenhead defence. Some great running by Harriet, Karine, and Amy, provided some great attacking in the D. Molly fluffed two open goals – sticks on the ground at all times a key objective all week. We still love her.
A great first team effort with plenty more to come!
MoM – Amy & Carine – congrats on your sterling efforts.
PS - Sue wants a MUTT!... Any suggestions?
