About the team

Reading Hockey Club boasts a strong Young Leaders team (aged 13 to 17) that helps adult Lead Coaches every week with coaching and umpiring the U8 to U12 age groups. In addition, YLs umpire and assist in the coordination of the monthly 7-side Thames Valley Mini tournaments at Reading HC and our own Super League.

The Young Leaders are the Next Generation of club leaders. The leadership skills they learn and practice provide great confidence not just in hockey but to take forward as they progress in their lives.

Our Young Leaders have used their volunteer time as part of Duke of Edinburgh qualifications as well as using it as a stepping stone to further coaching and umpiring qualifications.

YOUNG LEADERS COURSE AND QUALIFICATION
The next course will be Summer 2022 29th to 31st August. The registration form is shown further below on this page.
The Young Leaders training course at Reading is based on the England Hockey Award. The course covers:

  • General principles of leadership
  • Delivering hockey
  • Umpiring
  • Organising a hockey festival
  • Managing hockey
  • How hockey is structured and governed

The 3 day course brings to life the course work by providing opportunities to practice some of the skills they have learnt and to receive and give feedback under the supervision of the experienced course tutors.

Once qualified, the YLs support the Minis training sessions on Sunday mornings during the season between 9am and 10.30am, or the Minis Mid-week sessions. We appreciate that they will not be able to make every session but these Minis training sessions do provide an excellent opportunity for YLs to practice and develop their skills. Some of our older YLs (including those returning from University) are now working on our Summer Camps.

This EH award can help support GCSE/A Level PE; Duke of Edinburgh activities; CVs and Personal Statement; University and job applications. We sign off and provide evidence of volunteer work for DoE, school volunteer programmes, GCSE etc. at the end of each season as requested.

Young Leaders are requested to submit their availability for Mini sessions via pitchero.
